As a child, I recall learning a song that included these lyrics:
The toe bone’s connected to the foot bone,
The foot bone’s connected to the ankle bone,
The ankle bone’s connected to the leg bone…et cetera
I remembered it recently.
Not long after moving to Vancouver, I started to notice pain along the bases of my toes when I walked long distances. This development disappointed me, as I love to walk, especially in nature. My walking group in Guelph had been one of my anchors during the time I lived there. Not one to suffer gladly, I sought a solution.
My naturopath tried injections that seemed to help. A few days later, the pain would return. She noted that my second toe on my right foot was touching the end of my shoe, and wondered if that was part of the issue.
“Darn,” I thought. My high-topped walking shoes were in great shape. I had bought them in 2014 after I sprained my ankle while wearing sandals. Reluctantly, I got a new pair, a half size bigger. My feet were only slightly more comfortable.
My massage therapist worked on my feet every time I went. I always felt better walking home from appointments, but the pain would return long before the next visit. She wondered how the foot problems might be interconnected to other issues and suggested I see her chiropractor.
Dr. Liang spends more than ten minutes of the appointment looking for joints that aren’t working well and tight muscles and connective tissue that are keeping things out of place. He works deeply on the juicy knots to encourage them to soften before he attempts to adjust anything.
In the first visit, he discovered a tender spot at the top of my calf and started to massage it. I almost hit the ceiling. He also found that my right ankle was locked. I assume it had never fully recovered from the sprain almost three years ago.
After three sessions with him addressing issues in my feet, ankles, hips and spine, I am enjoying walks again.
I now understand why the potential solutions focused on my feet had provided only temporary or partial relief.
